"Harmon
deserved the Most Celebrated Private Detective of the World award,
which he received in December 1995.
I
was among several security and investigation agency owners who were
there and we felt proud of him.
We
worked together in the police force. He joined a day before me and
I could see he was committed to his job. Whatever he does, he does
it very diligently and produces results. As a person, he is a gentleman
and speaks honestly."
DR
M.JEYARAJ, president of the Security Association Singapore and former
police officer
-------------------------------------------
"I
dealt with Harmon on a few cases in the 1960s when he was a detective.
He is a very thorough and meticulous worker. Personally, he is warm
and friendly."
PROFESSOR
CHAO TZEE CHENG, Director of the Institute of Forensic Medicine
-------------------------------------------
"I
remember Harmon as being meticulously clean in the police force.
He always carried a pack of tissue papers in his pocket. When he
and I were both attached to Central Police station in his earlier
days, his office was always immaculately clean, to the extent that
he brought his own chair and had a telephone for his personal use.
He
kept a record of all wanted criminals and what they were wanted
for in his own black book, which he carried with him. Usually, detectives
refer to the Police Gazette for this list. He is very meticulous
in anything he does.
What
I like most about him is his patience and true grit. He can stake
out a place endlessly, going without meals, to achieve his objective.
And his honesty and integrity is beyond doubt."
MR
DALJIT SINGH, general manager of Premier Security Cooperative Society
Ltd
and retired Deputy Superintendent of the Singapore Police Force
-------------------------------------------
"Someone
who does not know Harmon might look at him and think his all-white
attire and the 14 rings on his fingers are peculiar. But don't let
that deceive you. Within is a private investigator who is very diligent,
effective and produces results.
He
makes a very good friend. I know that if I call him right now to
ask him for help, he will immediately do everything within his capacity
to assist. He takes many photographs of members and overseas guests
at our Rotary Club Orchard, Singapore meetings, and then distributes
them free of charge."
DR
C.K. MURTHY, structural engineer,
former professor in the Faculty of Architecture and Building, National
University of Singapore.
-------------------------------------------
"I
have known Harmon since 1969 and he was very different in his attire
then. Now he wears all white. In those days, he wore colourful or
shiny shirts and drove a sporty-looking Mini Cooper with about 80
colourful lights inside it and all sorts of words on it.
We
used to go to Wisma Indonesia and, with his flashy outfits, he used
to rival the Hongkong and Taiwanese singers and stars there. He
knew all of them and most of the local singers too. I recall he
knew a lot more Chinese songs than I did.
I
was a bit wary of him in the early days. He seemed a chameleon -
on the one hand, he was the tough cop and nabbing bigtime gangsters,
yet he appeared so gentle with his friends.
There
was a mixture of mischief, innocence and idealism about him. He
had a lot more hair too then. He has still retained his idealism
- he trusts everybody completely.
I
have never heard him speak bad about anybody. And he is still warm,
friendly and helpful, only not so wild. If he can bring a ray of
sunshine to someone's life, he's happy.
He
seems to like everything in twos: he carries two pagers, two handphones
and two pens. He even asks for two namecards when he meets someone."
MS
MAE LEE, real estate agent
-------------------------------------------
"He
is highly professional, ethical and courageous. He keeps people's
confidence and never lets them down. That is why people go to him.
His
reputation matters a lot to him. You can rely on him if you need
help. He always has time for people, is ready to listen and offers
good suggestions.
He
is considerate and sensitive to other people's feelings and is also
unstinting in his praise for others."
PROFESSOR
VALENTINE WINSLOW,
Associate Professor in the Law Faculty of the National University
of Singapore
-------------------------------------------
"My
recollections of Harmon date back to the days when he was working
in the Police Force with my father, Percy Pennefather (he was head
of the Criminal Investigation Department when he retired).
Harmon
earned my father's respect and my father was not an easy man to
please. He used to say Harmon was an outstanding officer who could
be relied on.
He
told the family he was very sad over the acid attack on Harmon.
Today,
Harmon is always in white. In those days, he used to come and play
or watch hockey, and he was the most colourfully dressed on the
field. My cousins and I used to jokingly call him 'The Pajama Boy'."
MS
ANNABEL ESS, senior lawyer
-------------------------------------------
"Harmon
is adept in detective work and immensely dedicated to his job."
MR
LIM SOO GEE,
Commander of Special Operations, Singapore Police Force
-------------------------------------------
"What
strikes me as a psychologist about Harmon is his total disregard
for his own safety. Life is not something he clings on to like most
people.
But
he is motivated by an ideal that is most important to him and that
seems to be a desire to do his work or duty to the utmost of his
capability. That is what distinguishes him from other acquaintances
and friends I have met."
DR
ELIZABETH NAIR,
Senior Lecturer in Psychology at the National University of Singapore
-------------------------------------------
"We
have many mutual friends and they all agree that Harmon is a very
responsible investigator and takes his work seriously. Confidentiality
and professionalism are very important to him and he never lets
a person down.
He
is also sociable and friendly and people feel comfortable with him."
MR
RICHARD TAN, patron of Cairnhill Community Club, Vice-President
of Rotary Club of Orchard Singapore
-------------------------------------------
"He
makes a wonderful friend, Whenever I need any help, I know he will
always be there for me, no matter how busy he is. He overworks all
the time.
The
people he helps or undertakes jobs for have very nice things to
say about him. He has a whole lot of thank you cards and letters
from them. In a way, he thrives on this kind of acknowledgement.
If he manages to stop someone from committing suicide, it keeps
him going for another month!
My
maid likes him very much because he treats her very well. She always
waits for him to arrive whenever I have a party. He is the last
to arrive and the last to leave!"
MS
MIE MIE YONG, private music teacher and a close friend of Harmon's
-------------------------------------------
"The
most notable thing about Harmon Singh is that he has not allowed
success to go to his head. In spite of all the achievements and
numerous accolades showered on him, he is still the same old Harmon
I have known for about three decades - always helpful and sincere.
He
is also a simple person, but this belies the meticulous manner in
which he carries out his work. Such meticulousness, to my mind,
has in no small way contributed to his success. Having received
international recognition in his field of work, he has done Singapore
proud."
HAJI M. RASHID HIDER, retired civil servant
-------------------------------------------
"I
find Harmon to be warm, friendly and hospitable. He is good to people,
irrespective of their background or level in society."
MS
HULYA UCER,
Deputy Economic and Commercial Counsellor at the Turkish Embassy
-------------------------------------------
"As
a boss, he is very fatherly in his approach. He is slow to reproach
but quick to give a second, third and fourth chance. He is a details
man and is very exacting. He is the only private investigator I'd
want to work with.
His
qualities of professionalism, integrity and sympathy fit in with
my own convictions."
MS KRISTINE SIM, private investigator,
a graduate who has worked for 6 years with Harmon's Private Investigation
and Consultancy Services
-------------------------------------------
"I
have worked with other private agencies before and I find Harmon
does not stinge on the equipment he supplies his staff with. We
have important gadgets such as handphones and cameras. Harmon is
a gentleman to work with. He is very good to the staff and when
we make a mistake, he does not make noise but quietly corrects it."
MR
JAMES YIN, private investigator working with
Harmon's Private Investigation and Consultancy Services for 9 years
-------------------------------------------
"Harmon
is very honest and hardworking - he works almost round the clock.
Any time we call him when we are out on a surveillance job, he responds.
Whenever his staff have a problem, he is always there to help us."
MR
ANDY TOH, private investigator with
Harmon's Private Investigation and Consultancy Services for 4 years
-------------------------------------------
"He
is a great guy but he needs lots of sleep. He works too hard. I
keep telling him he needs to switch off his phones and have some
peace sometimes. He perpetually has dark bags under his eyes. He
should pack off on a holiday after this book!"
